How Can You Make a Difference?

Like most of you, I spent Thanksgiving reflecting on everything I am thankful for; my family, friends and the opportunity to be a part of Orphan Outreach’s work around the world. It’s Giving Tuesday and after we have all spent the last weekend with plenty of food and the ability to start shopping and planning for Christmas, I think it is the perfect time to reflect on how  your generous support is helping us to impact the lives of children.

I know the orphan care crisis can seem overwhelming - there are more than 150 million orphans around the world—really, you must be wondering, how can I make a difference? The good news is our team has more than two decades of experience helping connect people just like you with opportunities to serve and care for orphaned children in crisis around the world. Through donations and involvement like yours, we help more than 4,000 children annually with educational, physical, spiritual and emotional healing and most importantly, we introduce them to God, who loves them and wants a relationship with them.

I have been thinking about one particular girl whose story I am going to share at the upcoming WOW (Women for Orphans Worldwide) lunches and Guatemalan markets in Houston and Dallas.  Last summer in Guatemala, I had the privilege of meeting Astrid, a precious 9 year-old girl living in Chimaltenango, Guatemala. Extreme poverty, abuse, and trafficking had wrecked havoc on Astrid’s mom, leaving her desperate and in despair. At the point of starvation, she turned to prostitution to feed her kids. This was the world Astrid was born into, unwanted by a mom ashamed of herself.

This is a tough story to tell because the reality of a life lived in poverty and abuse is difficult to tell, but it does have a happy ending.

As Astrid grew up she was described as a very sad child. Astrid knew her mother did not want her and took on a heavy burden that no child should feel—that she was a drain on the precious little resources they had. And so when Astrid first came to the Community Care Center, established and supported fully by Orphan Outreach, she was described as shy and timid. But when Astrid began receiving an education, a daily nutritious meal, counseling and the love of Jesus, she began to blossom.

Her mother noticed. And Astrid’s mom came to the Center to ask what had changed her daughter’s heart. She assumed God would never love any of her children because of all the terrible things she had done. But God is good and God is forgiving and eternally loving.  And it was at the community center founded and supported by Orphan Outreach that Astrid’s mother learned that God’s Grace is free for everyone–including her.

The bottom line is that the community center has changed Astrid’s life and her mother’s life too.

This is also a story of redemption, and how her mother now has big faith. Our ministry had an impact greater than just one child. We helped a broken family put their lives back together and that will have an eternal impact.

So how can you make a difference in the life of a child like Astrid? By donating now. For year-end we have generous donors that are going to match every gift up to $300,000. That's right, your donation is matched, dollar for dollar. Your support is truly transforming lives, and that support is needed now more than ever. Thank you for giving today!
