Our Father Responds (#OurFather Devotional)

"For the Lord your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, who shows no partiality and accepts no bribes. He defends the cause of the fatherless and widow and loves the foreigner residing among you, giving them food and clothing." Deuteronomy 10:17-18

The children Orphan Outreach serves are often powerless in that their basic rights have been violated and taken from them. They are vulnerable without protection; hence many of them are in the protection system. They often have no voice to speak for themselves. Their right to life, development, education and protection from violence, abuse, neglect have been taken away. And they may wonder why no one is standing up for them, why they're alone.

Imagine being in that state. These children are prone to being taken advantage of and vulnerable to the lures of this world. Their future is full of unknowns and insecurity. Their lives hang in the balance of someone stepping up.

Scripture assures us of the Father’s heart is that of action, of response!

Psalm 10:14 says, “but you, God, see the trouble of the afflicted; you consider their grief and take it in hand. The victims commit themselves to you; you are the helper of the fatherless.”

“The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.” Isaiah 40:28-29

Our Father doesn’t let these children remain in their hopelessness. Rather He responds. In fact, He responds with the same power that he exerted when He raised Jesus from the dead (Ephesians 1:19-20). Think about that – God leverages His all-surpassing power on behalf of those with no power.

And while He is more than capable of fighting on behalf of the orphaned on His own, He chooses to use you! You are God’s representative here on earth, in the here and now, to act on behalf of the weak, the powerless, the defenseless. In Psalm 82, the poet Asaph is speaking to those in high authority and power about those who are commonly neglected and given improper justice, saying “defend the cause of the weak and fatherless; maintain the rights of the poor and oppressed. Rescue the weak and needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked” (vs. 3-4).

He desires a response from each of us – a response that should be out of an overflow of His response. “We love because he first loved us” (1 John 4:19). You are probably reading this because He is already working in and through you to do something on behalf of these children who are near and dear to His heart. It’s going to be uncomfortable, overwhelming, heart-breaking and scary at times. However, we can entrust the most vulnerable with the One who is most powerful!

  1. How have you seen God respond in your own life? How have you seen His power at work?
  2. While serving orphans and vulnerable children, write down ways you see Our Father respond to His children.
  3. Now what is your response? What is your role in this journey of caring for the most vulnerable?
  4. Pray for God to show you what that might look like as you pursue Him first.
