Dios te Bendiga. God Bless You.

A group from Tabernacle Presbyterian Church were  some of the first people to meet Lourdes, Teresa, the staff and the children of Little House of Refuge after Orphan Outreach President Mike Douris said a resounding "yes" to partnership with the children's home in Xela, Guatemala. Josh Allen reflects now on what he's learned as he's returned again and again to the place that holds his heart.

Dios te bendiga. God bless you. This is a phrase I have written, read, said, and heard countless times over the past months. Nearly all of those times have been connected to Pequeno Refugio - Little House of Refuge -  a place that has received and shared so much of God’s blessings over the past six years.

I have heard team members from my church describe the experience there as “life-changing”. I would more specifically define it as “life-giving”.

Giving life to the children through education, nutrition, and pure fun in recreation.

Giving life to the staff by helping with chores, practicing English, and showing encouragement.

Giving life to other team members through devotionals, support, and innumerable memories. Through all the life given and received, it would be next to impossible to not be changed.

I first came to Little House in the summer of 2012, and God has brought me back every summer since. God’s love is everywhere, though too often we miss it in the busyness of our lives. At Little House, one can hardly escape the touch of His care.

A kick of a soccer ball.

A smiling glance.

A swipe of a paint brush.

A plea to be held. You find all of these moments and more at Little House. They are evidence of God’s love.

The staff and children at Pequeño Refugio have been a part of my life for the last three years. Even as my place in life changes, they will stay close through the love of God.

God shows us His truth in James 1:27: “Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction...”. This is what we do at Little House. And truly we receive love.

God lives. God loves. Dios te bendiga.

If you'd like to meet the staff and children of Pequeno Refugio, join us on a mission trip either in December (Christmas trip) or in February (individuals trip).
