Military Group Selects Orphan Outreach as 2013 Giving Recipient

Every evening after 10 p.m. and every Sunday, a hush falls over Germany. No lawn mowers. No groups of children squealing on playgrounds. No loud music. The culture values these contemplative “quiet hours.” Perhaps it was during these hours that the vision of Protestant Women of the Chapel (PWOC) was born.

PWOC began when military women in the 1950s began assisting military chaplains in their duties. Today PWOC spans local installations across the United States, Europe, Japan, Korea, and the Pacific.

This past October PWOC Europe held its annual conference in Willingen, Germany, and named Orphan Outreach its 2012–2013 Designated Offering Recipient.

This recognition grew out of the friendship of two women: Renae Niebergall, who coordinates operations for Orphan Outreach in the lush landscape of the Pacific Northwest, and Delilah Weiman, whose husband is Commander of Post at the Army base in Wiesbaden, Germany.

“Every Army post has a chapel, which is used for a number of things. Delilah is one of the Board members for the European conference of PWOC,” Renae said. “The members are all Americans, either in the military themselves or wives of military men. For whatever events the PWOC does for the next year, funds raised will be designated for Orphan Outreach. During the conference the women were so excited … they want to be more involved than just writing a check.”

“Orphan Outreach was nominated along with seven other organizations and then voted on by the leadership of 32 installations throughout Europe,” Delilah said. “Orphan Outreach was selected by an overwhelming number of votes.”

PWOC is a women’s ministry that has four key aims: (1) leading women to Christ, (2) teaching women solid Bible study, (3) developing them in prayer, evangelism, stewardship and social service, while developing them spiritually, and (4) involving women in the work of their chapel (using their gifts).
