Women for Orphans World (WOW), an auxiliary of Orphan Outreach, launched its first Bike-A-Thon, called Wheelin’ for Orphans Worldwide (WOW,) in June and earned $2,000 during the 3 hour event.

“We had three goals for the Bike-A-Thon,” said Tiffany Taylor-Wines, Orphan Outreach Director. “Our first goal was to raise money for our orphans in Guatemala, increase awareness of our cause, and then to have fun, and we succeeded.”
The money was used to buy formula, medicine, and constructions supplies on the WOW summer mission trips to Guatemala.

Thirty area boys and girls, and some parents, participated in the June 2 event at White Rock Lake. The riders were responsible for getting their own sponsors, collecting their donations, and turning them in after the ride. Donations were made on a per mile basis or a flat donation.

“This is the first time we’ve done a WOW Bike-A-Thon, and are very pleased with the results,” stated Ms. Wines. “One of our Orphan Outreach board members has a home on White Rock Lake, and their house served as the start and finish points for the race. We also got quite a bit of attention from area residents who told us they want to participate next year.”

“We hope other groups will host WOW Bike-A-Thon to support orphans,” she continued. “We’ve created templates and instructions, and will provide that information to other groups that decide to host a WOW Bike-A-Thon to raise money for Orphan Outreach.”
